The best part of my job is the first thing in the morning, when I see every student coming into school and I try to make them smile.

Mr. David Hughes

Meet Mr. David L. Hughes, a teaching assistant at GNB Voc-Tech. Mr. Hughes  helps in various classes and has worked at the school for five years. Inspired by Mr. O’ Brien to take the job, Mr. Hughes provides support to students and other faculty members. Mr. Hughes has inspired many students in their work and their pursuits through his words of wisdom and genuine care for the well being of students. In his previous career, Mr. Hughes worked as a millwright and a boiler room engineer, so he is no stranger to much of the work that gets done in our career and technical areas. Specifically, he has given examples to the students in Steam Engineering for ways that they could acquire their licenses in the trade, such as the types of careers they could go into and the money they could gain. Mr. Hughes’  past experiences have given him a better understanding of how to help students, especially in the Steam Engineering program.

Mr. Hughes is known for his love of life,  positive attitude, and when the holidays roll around, his festive outfits. When asked about what his favorite part of the job is, he says, “Every morning, when students walk in and I try to brighten their spirits.” He hopes to help each student become the best that they can be. “I think a successful student is a student that pays attention to [the] curriculum, works hard, and has manners and respect for all others,” Mr. Hughes commented. Besides his job, he enjoys a variety of activities such as shell-fishing, boating, and working around the yard at his home. Mr. Hughes also shows earnest support for firefighters and first responders, which are other careers that he considered pursuing. He commented on what it would take to do his job as he states, “You have to be able to understand the students… and be able to work with them and you must have patience…definitely patience.” Overall, he tries to help students and teachers alike in any way he can. Mr. Hughes is a great member of the GNB Voc-Tech staff and gives inspiration to students with his positivity and motivation
