It’s that time of year again when we eat good food and spend time with family and friends. Leaves changing colors, snow days, and warming up next to the fire. And you know what that means! Pumpkin pie becomes one of the most common desserts to be eaten this time of year. Delicious filling and flaky crust beloved by many. But why exactly is that? When did it become so popular and when was it invented? Well, let’s discuss it!

Much to mine and probably your disbelief pumpkin pie was not first invented and served at the first Thanksgiving not to say though there couldn’t have been other pumpkin dishes. The first initial “pie” though made from pumpkin was a dish where the top would be cut off and the seeds emptied out to soon be replaced with stewed pumpkin, spices, apples, eggs, and bread crumbs. Then to be sent to bake and eventually served. It wasn’t until 1796 that Amelia Simmons published her cookbook that the pie we know and love was even similar to what we have today.

Let’s talk recipes and pie toppings, there are so many of them out there that it might be a bit intimidating but don’t fret. For pie recipes, let’s say we’re using either one of these recipes. McCormick Pumpkin Pie Recipe or  Pumpkin Pie entirely from Scratch.  We got the classic whip cream topping of course. Though have you considered vanilla ice cream with it instead? Just as good as whipped cream or if your feeling even more adventurous you can try some of these creative topping ideas for your pie this holiday season.
