\Nicholas Mitcheson
By Nathan Ortiz
Nicholas Mitcheson is an English teacher at Greater New Bedford Regional Vocational Technical High School. He has been surrounded by academics his entire life. His mother, who was a big inspiration in what he does today, was a teacher herself and helped create his love for literature and reading. Now in his fourth year working at Voc-Tech, Mr. Mitcheson not only helps his students learn but also strives to learn something new every day. Starting off as a paraprofessional in Fairhaven and eventually teaching at Hastings Middle School, it has been a long road to get to where he is right now. Mitcheson believes that if you want to be a successful learner you need to push yourself every day. “Since teaching is not really a stagnant profession you always have something you could learn to help expand the knowledge of the students as well as your own,” he said. When asked to give advice to people interesting in teaching he stated, “It’s a great career, but the time you have to put into it, you have to really love it because if you don’t it’s going to be a job. And if you treat this profession as a job then you will not get out of it what you really want.” Mr. Mitcheson enjoys all aspects of his career and understands that it’s a huge reward knowing that you are progressing the education of students in a positive way.
