New Course at GNBVT African American Studies Fall 2021

It gives me great pleasure to know that our students will be offered a course that delves into the trials and triumphs, and the incredible accomplishments, despite persistent adversity, that African Americans have contributed to this country.

Principal Williams

As the 2021-2022 school year approaches, GNB Voc-Tech is proud to introduce a new course option for our students starting this Fall.  The African American Studies course is designed for all students, and the robust and informative curriculum was created by veteran teachers, Mr. MJ Waters, Capt. USMC Ret., and Mrs. S. Canery, UMD / HOF.

“Writing the curriculum with Stephanie Carney was a fantastic experience in which we captured an accurate representation of the African American experience.  Students will develop a greater understanding and appreciation of the hardships, obstacles and barriers black people have had to overcome in pursuit of equality, fairness and the American dream,” Mr. Waters states.

The diverse content that the students will study will focus on the significant value of African American culture to national and international life.   The course will also highlight contemporary topics and contributions made by members of the Greater New Bedford African American community.

Principal Warley William expresses, “It gives me great pleasure to know that our students will be offered a course that delves into the trials and triumphs, and the incredible accomplishments, despite persistent adversity, that African Americans have contributed to this country.”
