Since the 2017-2018 school year, carpentry students at GNB Voc-Tech have been working on the new welcome facility of the Lloyd Center, LBC Welcome Center.
They are building this facility under the guidelines of the Living Building Challenge (LBC). According to the LBC website, “The Living Building Challenge is a green building certification program and sustainable design framework that visualizes the ideal for the built environment. The Living Building Challenge is the world’s most rigorous proven performance standard for buildings. People from around the world use our regenerative design framework to create spaces that give more than they take.”
The GNB Voc-Tech students watched as professionals set the foundation of the building and the students constructed the entire rough framing. With the objective of finishing the new metal roofing, they plan to make the building substantially weathertight before thebad weather so other career majors can work undercover at the center as soon as possible. With the completion of this building, the LBC Welcome Center will become one of a few self-sufficient buildings in the country to receive LBC classification and the only one to have been built by students.
