It was through participation at one of these STEM conferences that Ms. Aubertine found out about the Presidential Award of Excellence.
The White House chooses one science and one math teacher from each state and jurisdiction. Also, this spring there will be a state-wide ceremony with DESE for being nominated. If she is chosen at the national level, Ms. Aubertine will receive a certificate signed by the president, a $10.000 award from NSF, and an all-expense paid trip for an award ceremony in Washington, DC. When asked about this experience, Ms. Aubertine expressed her gratitude, “I have learned so much from the process, and am so excited and truly honored to be chosen.”
In order to apply for the award, she had to submit a 30 min non-stop video of her teaching, 3 letters of recommendations, a 5 page supplement page of material that strengthens my written response, and lastly the written Responses to five dimensions of Outstanding teaching that demonstrated the following criteria:
- Dimension One: Mastery of content appropriate for the grade level taught.
- Dimension Two: Use of effective instructional methods and strategies that are appropriate for the students in the classroom and that support student learning.
- Dimension Three: Effective use of student assessments to evaluate, monitor, and improve student learning.
- Dimension Four: Reflective practice and life-long learning to improve teaching and student learning.
- Dimension Five: Leadership in education inside and outside of the classroom
