Meet Mrs. Micaela Shea, a Math teacher here at Greater New Bedford Voc-Tech. She teaches 9th grade Algebra 1 and 10th grade Math Concepts. Mrs. Shea has been teaching for 20 years and this is her 9th year teaching at GNBVT. She attended the University of New Hampshire-Durham for her Bachelor’s in Animal Science, UMass Dartmouth for her Master’s in Mathematics, and American International College for her second Master’s. When first deciding her career of choice she originally wanted to be a veterinarian, however, she tried substitute teaching right out of college. She later became a permanent math sub and fell in love with the profession. Mrs. Shea loves that when teaching each day is a little different from the last. She gets to meet different students with a variety of personalities and learning styles.

Mrs. Shea likes working at a vocational school because she loves to hear and learn about what the students are learning in shop and what they like about it. She gets a lot of her inspiration from her fellow teachers. “they all have their own style and perspective and it’s great to be surrounded by that variety.” Before working at GNBVT she worked at Roosevelt School in New Bedford. Mrs. Shea provides Algebra 1 tutoring on Mondays. She would also love to coach an IEA (Interscholastic Equestrian Association) team at GNBVT. Outside of school one of Mrs. Shea’s biggest interest is her horse Cash. She and Cash will participate in Western Dressage shows and go on trail rides together. Mrs.Shea also loves going on different outings with her husband and her two dogs, Hudson and Sally. They are always on the lookout for restaurants or places that are dog-friendly.

Mrs. Shea is a wonderful teacher here at GNBVT and during her years she has learned a lot and would like to give some words of wisdom for incoming freshmen. “Freshman – these next four years are going to go by super quickly so make sure to explore all the things that GNBVT offers so that you can find your niche. Seniors – this is your year to find out who you want to be but it’s also ok to change midstream because you may find something else you are passionate about or find that what you thought was your goal is really not what you want to do.”
