NEW BEDFORD – For the first time ever, Greater New Bedford Regional Vocational Technical High School is sponsoring an essay writing contest for sixth graders. The contest is limited to sixth-grade students enrolled in any of the public, private or parochial schools in New Bedford, Dartmouth and Fairhaven that send students to GNB Voc-Tech.
“We wanted to get younger students thinking about career choices,” said Jimmy Owens, Coordinator of Guidance/Pupil Personnel Services at GNB Voc-Tech. “This seemed to be a good way to do that.”
The theme of the essay is: “What I Want to Be When I Grow Up.”
Each school is being asked to submit their top three essay finalists. Schools must submit essays to GNB Voc-Tech by March 21st.
Five winners will be chosen by the English department at GNB Voc-Tech. Winners will receive book awards, valued at more than $200. All essay finalists will receive certificates.
An awards dinner for all of the finalists and their parents will be held at GNB Voc-Tech on April 16th.
GNB Voc-Tech accepts students from New Bedford, Dartmouth and Fairhaven. It offers academic instruction as well as career and technical education in more than two dozen fields, ranging from Environmental Science and Technology to Legal and Protective Services.
The school is an accredited member of the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC).
