Program Description

The Fashion Design program prepares students for work related to apparel design, manufacturing, marketing, and retail sales. Students are taught the fundamentals of sewing construction with an emphasis on safety, using industrial sewing equipment and design principles. Students also learn computer-aided pattern drafting.

As freshman and sophomores, the students learn the basics in sewing construction, work with commercial patterns, are introduced to the principles of pattern drafting, and learn fabric identification and fabric care.

As juniors, students learn more complicated techniques including tailoring, garment fitting, continued flat pattern drafting, and introduction to garment alterations. Projects for the Junior class often include "live work" projects for the school or community, emphasizing team co-operation and production techniques. Every year the junior class makes teddy bears as part of the "Books and Bears" project, helping the New Bedford Police Department's trauma unit. The Juniors also assist with costumes for the Voc-Tech Drama Club.

As seniors, students continue to develop their skills through advanced sewing projects including advanced tailoring, home decor including machine quilting, curtains and draperies. Senior students participate in the "Tailor Shop", an alteration service offered to the teachers within the school. Lessons include working with clients, record keeping, fitting knowledge, and precision work.

Juniors and seniors learn computer-aided pattern drafting for personal garments and costume designing.

Related classes include estimating cost of projects, related math, window displays, textile science including textile identification and care, color application in garment selections and home decor.
